Contemporaneous brings to life some of the world’s most jaw-dropping and unabashedly cool pieces of music. This is music that not only describes the world in which we live, but does so confidently, with boldness and attitude, taking no prisoners. With a lineup like this, this is certain to be a life changing event. Don’t even think about missing this one.
Clunker Concerto, for junk-car-part-playing percussion quartet and chamber orchestra, is as exhilarating as it is innovative. The intrepid TIGUE Percussion plays on hubcaps, fenders, and other scrap parts to thrill you with Rome Prize winning composer Sean Friar’s unique, wacky, and head-banging sounds. Thanks to a Composer Assistance Program grant from New Music USA, Sean will be present at our performances!
Co-founder of Indiana-based new music project Holographic, Jeremy Podgursky’s MINDJOB is a frenetic distortion of the groove that never was — an off-kilter reworking of beloved musical clichés which transforms into a dazzling, jazzy tour-de-force.
Another recent Rome Prize winner, Andrew Norman puts his labored process of composition to music in his intense and dramatic work Try. With false-starts, mulligans, stumbles, and chaotic rewinds, this beautifully constructed piece depicts its own creation.
Co-director of the legendary new music enterprise Bang on a Can, David Lang's increase is a single large-scale build. Starting with wispy, almost inaudible strains, the piece roars to a crushing conclusion that is sure to rock your world.
More about Neighborhood Classics:
Contemporaneous is thrilled to perform this show for Neighborhood Classics at New York's P.S. 142, hosted by artistic directors Simone Dinnerstein and James Matheson! We are particularly excited to be working with the kids at this Lower East Side school during the day of our show to expose the them to the music of our time and engage them in fun activities that we hope will hook them on new music early on! More about TIGUE:
TIGUE is the latest project by percussionists Matt Evans, Amy Garapic, and Carson Moody. Founded in early 2012, the group aims to present new work from their friends and contemporaries as well as themselves. Recently, they have been featured in projects with the Bring to Light Festival, Make Music New York Winter, and the Contagious Sounds series. They also participated in a recording of John Luther Adams’ Inuksuit to be released by Cantaloupe Records and a residency at Dartmouth College. Guest percussionists Maria Finkelmeier (in lieu of Carson Moody) andNathaniel Hartman will join TIGUE to perform Sean Friar’s Clunker Concerto in this program.
