VICKI LEONA NGUYEN
COMMUNICATIONS & PROJECT COORDINATOR
Vicki Leona (b.1997 | she/her) is a NYC-based, Vietnamese-American composer and multi-media artist having written for chamber, orchestral, electronic mediums, and music for media. Her work seeks to explore the psycho-social aspects of human behavior, both in and out of music. Her current musical interests include breaking the barriers of accessibility within music performance and expanding what it means to listen vs. participate in music. She also explores the complicated nature of language (a theme strongly influenced by her upbringing in a 'Vietnamese-speaking-only' household) through field recordings, found audio, and other linguistic quirks like double-meanings. Her aesthetics are deeply tied to her practice as a percussionist; extended techniques, sporadic interruptions amidst melodic lines, and glitch-like textures can all be commonly found throughout her body of work.
A Tennessee native, Vicki received her bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in Music Composition while also studying in pre-medicine. She earned her Master of Music Composition at New York University studying with Julia Wolfe, Robert Honstein, Molly Joyce, Shelly Washington, and Michael Gordon.
Outside of composition, Vicki loves photography, visual illustration, and feeding her loved ones the best food straight out of her Michelin-grade palms.
