VICENTE ALEXIM
CLARINET
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, clarinetist and composer Vicente Alexim dedicates himself to the performance of both traditional and contemporary music, as well as to writing works that explore a wide range of instrumental possibilities.
Noted by The New York Times for his elegant playing, Vicente is a member of Contemporaneous, a New York-based ensemble focusing on music by living composers. A winner of The Lillian Fuchs Chamber Music Competition, Vicente has been featured as soloist in performances of John Adams’ Gnarly Buttons in Carnegie Hall; of Richard Strauss’s Duett-Concertino at Manhattan School of Music; and of his own Concerto de Câmara with the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira Jovem at Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, as well as with the Orquestra de Câmara da Bienal at Sala Cecília Meireles.
The 2011 winner of Festival Tinta Fresca and the 2015 winner of the Robert Starer Composition Award, Vicente has received commissions by Orquestra Filarmônica de Minas Gerais and Contemporaneous, among others. His compositions have been featured in numerous music festivals, including the Bard Music Festival, Atlantic Music Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, the XVIII and XXIII editions of the Bienal de Música Brasileira Contemporânea, and the XXIV Panorama da Música Brasileira Atual. His music has been performed by renown interpreters, including Contemporaneous, JACK Quartet, Mivos Quartet, Ensemble Either/Or, C4, Orquestra Filarmônica de Minas Gerais, and Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira Jovem. Vicente also developed an interactive sound installation inspired by the Brazilian artistic movement Tropicália that was featured in the exhibition Vamos Comer, put together by Ambos in Rio de Janeiro, 2017.
Vicente taught music theory at Hunter College and holds a PhD in music composition from the City University of New York, a Master of Music degree in clarinet performance from Manhattan School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. His previous teachers include the composers Jason Eckardt, Reiko Fueting, Marcos Lucas, and Caio Senna, and the clarinetists Charles Neidich, Alan Kay, Cristiano Alves, and Paulo Moura.
